20/22 October 2010 - ICIT/IPE Heriot-Watt University - Orkney Campus

Background

The MASTS community is composed of nine research establishments across Scotland with a joint mission to create international excellence in marine science. MASTS works through nine disciplinary Joint Research Themes (JRTs) [biodiversity, predators, aquaculture, oceanography, platforms, coasts, genomics, fisheries, and modelling] focussed on four projects addressing major regional and strategic issues of importance to Scotland - Salmon Genome; Rockall; Fjord Coasts; and Renewable Energy. A workshop to progress the Marine Predator JRT (Marine Top Predators and Renewables) was held in Perth in March 2010 and at the end of November renewable energy will be one of seven themes at the MASTS Annual Science Conference to be held this year at the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS).

The MREDS programme is a collaborative administration of five research establishments in Scotland seeking ways to strengthen the marine renewables sector nationally. Six work packages have so far secured £2million in funding to encompass research into power export and grid issues; petroleum industry collaboration; risk management; hydrodynamics; ecological impacts and socio-economic values.

Objectives

Sited in Orkney at the heart of marine renewable deployment, the objectives of the MASTS/MREDS workshops in October are to identify potential research initiatives, themes and collaborations drawing on the broad experience of the MASTS/MREDS communities and associated bodies in the public and private sectors. Possible research funding is a key consideration for the workshops which aim to identify firm proposals at the end of the three days.

Back to top of pageInvitation

We are inviting proposals for a series of 15 minute presentations (10 minutes talk, 5 minutes questions) from the MASTS and MREDS communities on any subject related to marine renewables and the theme of each day. We are asking only for names and subjects (not abstracts) but we emphasise the objectives of research ideas and funding. The outline programme for each day is outlined below.
